Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both her two appearances on Roseanne. Because of their fear of stress, the parents didn't want to see the actress pursue acting until she reached the age of 18. Perry claimed she felt nervous to be an actor at the age of 16, but she began doing shows in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer to the university from Boston University. Perry was able to land tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. The feeling of homelessness, however, led her back to California and she returned to work in the stage. Perry's mother and I appeared on Broadway as a couple for the play The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015, she performed with her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of the ABC drama The Family in 2016. Her father played her character in the ABC Drama Scandal. That same year her character was cast the younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again playing a young version of her mother's character. She got the part by auditioning for an open role despite having a connection to the character.
